Should Schools Require Uniforms?

How much time do you spend picking out what to wear to school each morning? If you wear a uniform, probably not much. Should more schools require them?

Supporters of uniforms say they keep kids focused on schoolwork, not clothes. Some people think uniforms cut down on bullying too. They say students are less likely to be teased when everyone wears the same thing.

But other people say uniforms stop kids from showing their personalities. Plus, uniforms can be expensive. Buying all the shirts, pants, or skirts can cost up to $500.

Here’s what two of our readers say.

I wear a uniform to school. I think it’s great! Mornings are easier because you know exactly what you will be wearing each day. And you won’t be jealous of anyone at school who might be wearing nicer clothes than you. Also, you can still show off your personal style even if you wear a uniform. I like to wear mine with fun leggings and sweaters.

Uniforms take away kids’ freedom. Picking your own clothes helps you have control over your life. And wearing the same thing every day would be boring! I like wearing sweatpants and a T-shirt to school. It’s hard to focus if I’m uncomfortable. Besides, kids who wear uniforms need regular clothes for outside of school. Buying two sets of clothes can be expensive.
