Should Kids Go Screen-Free for a Week?

Many kids will soon turn off the TV and put away their favorite video games. That’s because May 5 to 11 is Screen-Free Week. People promise to go seven days without using any screens for fun. The goal is to spend time outside and connect with others.

Many experts say taking a break from screens can be good for kids. After all, spending too much time on digital devices can make it hard for kids to focus. It can also prevent them from getting enough sleep.

But not everyone thinks kids need to go completely screen-free. Some people say screen time is OK for kids as long as they don’t overdo it.

Here’s what two of our readers say.

Kids should take a break from screens. If we don’t, we could miss out on learning new hobbies or skills. Going screen-free will also give us more time to play outside or be with family and friends. Plus, if kids aren’t glued to screens, we can focus on our schoolwork. I don’t always like getting off my screens. But I know it’s a good thing.

Screens are a big part of kids’ daily lives. We use them not just for fun but for learning too. For example, we can read e-books or play educational games. We can also look up information online. Kids don’t need to give up screens completely for a week. Instead, we can just limit the amount of time we spend on devices.
